Bears Clinch NFC North Title and First Round Bye In Playoffs
One day after a discouraging loss in Cleveland dropped the Bears to 1-3, a supremely confident Lovie Smith called a staff meeting to encourage his assistants to stay the course while guaranteeing that brighter days were ahead.

The second-year head coach proved to be clairvoyant in the weeks that followed, leading the surprising Bears to eight straight wins and ultimately the NFC North Division title.

"He said, "Guys, at the end of the year we're going to look back at this meeting and we're going to laugh and say that we made the playoffs and we were 1-3,'" said defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. "He never stopped believing and carried us."

Bears Defense Handles Favre and Win Eighth In A Row
The
Bears roughed up Brett Favre with their defense. They knocked him down, intercepted two of his passes and beat the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field for the first time since 1993.

Their 19-7 victory was No. 8 in a row -- their longest streak since the 1985 Super Bowl team started 12-0.

"All the years I've played against them, I think defensively this is as well as I've seen them play," said a banged-up Favre, who had swelling in his wrist and a cut on his hand after hitting it on the helmet of a Bears' defensive linemen while delivering a third-quarter pass.

"They're just good."

Bears Win Seventh Game In A Row - Lead NFC North
With their 13-10 triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday, the Bears (8-3) extended their winning streak to seven, the team's longest since 1986. The defense once again spearheaded the charge, as Chicago's only touchdown -- a 1-yard pass from Kyle Orton to John Gilmore -- was set up by Alex Brown's forced fumble that Tommie Harris recovered at the Bucs 1 on Tampa Bay's first possession. "We play good defense, we run the football and try not to make too many mistakes," said head coach Lovie Smith. "That is our formula for success."

Jerry's Surgery A Success!

Unfortunately in recent news, Jerry was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his neck that required surgery and could sideline him for 3-4 months. The procedure was performed Saturday in Pittsburgh, and we are glad to report that Jerry's surgery was a success!  Jerry is free to begin light rehab in 7-10 days.

Jerry sustained the injury when he got tangled with receiver Bobby Wade during the Bears' second training camp practice in Bourbonnais.

Azumah's loss will hurt the Bears on both defense and special teams. Last season the 5-10, 192-pounder regained his starting cornerback job four weeks after being demoted and ended up tying for the team lead with four interceptions. He also led the NFL in kickoff returns with a 29.0-yard average, the first Bears player to do so since Dennis Gentry in 1986.

Email Jerry for support at jerry@azumahallpro.com.  We look forward to Jerry returning to the field and helping the Bears in 2004.
